A Mississippi man and his mother were arrested and charged with child abuse after a 13-year-old girl who had been staying with the family was impregnated.
The accused man, 27, is charged with one count of statutory rape, two counts of sexual battery, and one count of human trafficking. His mother is charged with conspiracy to commit tampering with evidence, attempted tampering with physical evidence, and felony child neglect, defined as intentionally and knowingly permitting the continuing sexual abuse of a child.
The accused and his mother are the son and wife of a pastor at a local Baptist church. A "baby shower" for the teen was allegedly scheduled at the church.
An investigation began after an anonymous party reported that the child was pregnant. During the investigation, the male suspect's phone was searched and revealed multiple images and videos showing himself raping the child when she was 13. Communications between the girl and others discussing her pregnancy and identifying the accused male as the biological father were also found. Further, the girl's mother revealed the accused allegedly admitted to her that he is the biological father.
The investigation also revealed that the accused's mother, also charged with crimes, allegedly instructed the victim to tamper with evidence and told her how to fabricate a false DNA test with investigators. Text messages between the accused's mother and the victim were also found that allegedly show the mother attempting to coerce, direct, and instruct the victim to give false information regarding the accused male to investigators.
The teen's mother allegedly received money and favors from the accused male.

Commentary
If a 13-year-old is pregnant, that is a sign of child sexual abuse. Minors cannot legally consent to sexual relations anywhere in the U.S., so the pregnancy indicates a felony crime.
In the above case, an anonymous person noticed the teen's pregnancy and made a report which triggered an investigation. That is exactly what safe adults do who are committed to protecting children.
The accused's mother knew of the abuse, as did the victim's own mother, but it is unclear if anyone else knew or had a reasonable suspicion of the abuse until the teen was visibly pregnant. The victim's mother may face criminal charges in the future, as well.
Narratives framing pregnancy in a minor as "consensual", a "quiet marriage", "informal adoption", or as any other "celebration" do not decriminalize alleged felony child sexual abuse.
Other physical signs of possible sexual abuse include:
· Vaginal/rectal bleeding
· Genital pain
· Itching, swelling, discharge from private parts
· Rashes on private parts
· Difficult bowel movements
· Painful urination
· Reoccurring stomach/headaches
· Trauma to private parts, lower abdomen, extremities
· Sexually transmitted infections/diseases
· Trouble walking/sitting
· Self-mutilation
The final takeaway is a minor's pregnancy is always a mandatory reporting trigger as a sign of child sexual abuse.
